About

Sebastian Fath Contemporary was founded in Mannheim/Germany by Sebastian Fath in 2003, and currently represents 20 emerging and established artists. The gallery program’s focus is on reduced forms of international contemporary art including sculpture, video, sound, painting and prints as well as the trade with art of the 20th century. SFC is continuously expanding its program with exhibitions of young artists from Germany and abroad.

Every year SFC presents up to twelve exhibitions. Additionally, the gallery regularly participates in joint projects in public and private insitutions, such as galleries, museums and art associations as well as private collections. Besides the exhibiting activity, SFC advises collectors and organisations in setting up and taking care of art collections.

Until May 2011, the gallery was located in a monumental art nouveau building between Christ Church and the Water Tower, the landmark of the city of Mannheim. In April 2015, the gallery moved into the villa built by the chemist Georg Otto Giulini in 1899 in the Werderstraße, overlooking Christ Church.

SFC is member of the Bundesverband Deutscher Galerien (BVDG).

ESTATES

SFC represents the estate of the painter Hermann Abrell (1937–2017). The Cologne artist has dedicated his entire artistic life to the line. With pencil, ink, acrylic or gouache, he sets his freehanded lines horizontally or vertically on unprimed canvas, MDF panels or paper to create spatial grids. From 1982 onwards, his meditative paintings are characterized solely by the vertical line. The individual visual expression of Abrell’s paintings lies in their contemplative and lyrical nature. His estate is preserved by SFC.

SFC also represents the estate of Nan Hoover (1931–2008). The artist is one of the pioneers of international video and performance art from the 1970s. In her works, which are always marked by light and shadow, her focus lies on corporeality and intimacy as well as on issues of movement and timelessness. Her work includes video works, performances, installations, sculptures and charcoal drawings. They are characterized by the search for ambiguous abstraction of body landscapes and evolve out of the medium of painting. Her early paintings of the late 1960s and the early 1970s, are currently being rediscovered. Her estate is preserved by SFC in cooperation with the Nan Hoover Foundation in Amsterdam.
